Nestled on the shore of the Manukau Harbour, Ambury Regional Park is a working farm, an important education centre and a birdwatchers paradise with a volcanic history – Just a 6 minute drive from the hotel.
The park sits on ash-covered lava flows from Mangere Mountain and has views across the harbour to the Manukau Heads and Waitakere Ranges. It takes its name from the Ambury Milk Company, which milked cows and ran a town milk supply farm here from 1893-1965. Farm animals at Ambury are family favourites. You will see sheep, goats, cows, pigs, pet lambs (in spring), chickens, turkeys, rabbits and peacocks.
The park's Manukau foreshore and the foreshore on Kiwi Esplanade host a range of bird species. Year-round inhabitants include pied stilts and royal spoonbills, and in autumn large flocks of migratory birds from the South Island (e.g. wrybills and pied oyster catchers) can be seen. Bar-tailed godwits and knots migrate to the harbour for the summer from Siberia and Alaska.
